Why are more people using AI to help them study religious texts?

I started using ChatGPT to help me understand passages from my faith's holy book instead of always going to my pastor or rabbi, and honestly it's been really helpful. But some people in my community think it's weird or even disrespectful to use AI for this. Is this becoming more normal or am I just overthinking it?

I'd push back on the "more people" part a bit - there's no real data showing a widespread shift, so it might just feel that way in certain online circles. That said, using AI as a study tool alongside traditional sources isn't inherently disrespectful; people have always used commentaries, dictionaries, and other reference materials to dig deeper into texts. The key difference your community might be wrestling with is whether AI feels impersonal or disconnected from the interpretive tradition, but honestly that's something only you and your faith community can work through together. You're probably not overthinking it - just recognize that adding a tool to your learning process doesn't replace the value of talking things through with someone who knows your faith inside and out.
