Why are we seeing so many more asteroids near Earth lately?

I've been reading that astronomers have discovered way more near-Earth asteroids in the last couple of years than they used to find. Is this because there are actually more of them, or just because our detection technology got way better? Should I be worried about any of them hitting us?
