Why do I dream about my job interviews that haven't happened yet?

I've got this interview coming up next month and for the past week I keep having these super detailed dreams about it going wrong in different ways. Last night I dreamed I forgot how to speak English halfway through, and the night before I showed up in pajamas. Is my brain just processing anxiety, or is there something else going on with pre-event dreams?

Your brain is definitely working through anxiety, and those nightmare scenarios are pretty standard when you're stressed about something important coming up. Dreams tend to pull from your worries and replay worst-case scenarios, which is why you're getting these vivid mishaps - it's your mind rehearsing what you're nervous about, not predicting what'll actually happen. The detailed nature of them just means the interview matters to you, so your subconscious is treating it as high-stakes material worth processing. Most people experience this kind of pre-event dreaming, and honestly, it usually settles down once the actual event gets closer or happens.

those anxiety dreams also tend to get worse the closer the actual event gets, so what you're experiencing right now - a week out - is pretty peak stress territory. the detailed, catastrophic scenarios (forgetting english, showing up unprepared) are your brain basically running worst-case simulations, which is honestly exhausting but totally normal. one thing that might help is that these vivid nightmares often mean your brain is *processing* the worry rather than you being genuinely unprepared - the anxiety is getting burned off in sleep instead of building up silently. once you get through the interview itself, they'll probably stop pretty abruptly.
