Why do I see myself in dreams with a photoshopped or filtered face?

Over the past few months I've been dreaming about myself a lot, but not how I actually look - sometimes with perfect skin without any acne, sometimes with a different face shape, like I'm filtered through a Beauty filter. Is this normal or is my brain reacting to constantly using filters on social media?

Don't worry - it's just how your brain works, not a sign you're addicted to filters. When you dream, your brain operates with images that it often idealizes or jumbles together, and if you frequently see yourself in filtered form on social media, that image becomes part of your associations and pops up in your dreams.

The same thing happens if you watch a lot of movies - you dream of yourself as a movie character, or if you read fantasy - you see yourself in another world. Your brain feeds on the information around it and uses it in your dreams. It's completely normal and absolutely harmless, and it has nothing to do with psychological problems.

The question isn't quite accurate - it's not that filters are "causing" these dreams, but rather your brain during sleep is simply working with what it has in memory. If you regularly look at yourself through filters on social media, that becomes one of your "self-images" alongside your mirror reflection and photographs, and during dreams your brain can draw on any of them or a mix of them. This is completely normal and doesn't say anything about addiction - just a reflection of what you consume visually.

Your brain during sleep just mixes up what you've seen while awake, and the "ideal" version of your face is just one of the variations it constructed from photos, mirrors, and yeah, filters from your phone. If you didn't use filters, you'd still have the same process happening in your dreams, just with different source material. It's completely normal, nothing to worry about - it's just how your memory works.
