Blood groups differ based on special protein antigens present on the surface of red blood cells. The most common classification system is ABO, which divides blood into four groups. Some people have antigen A, others have antigen B, some have both antigens, and others have neither. This is determined by genes we inherit from our parents. There's also the Rh factor - an additional protein that's either present or absent. So in total there are eight combinations: from the first O(I) Rh-negative group to the fourth AB(IV) Rh-positive group.
