Blood groups differ based on special protein antigens present on the surface of red blood cells. The most common classification system is ABO, which divides blood into four groups. Some people have antigen A, others have antigen B, some have both antigens, and others have neither. This is determined by genes we inherit from our parents. There's also the Rh factor - an additional protein that's either present or absent. So in total there are eight combinations: from the first O(I) Rh-negative group to the fourth AB(IV) Rh-positive group.
Why do we have different blood types? It's just a genetic trait that emerged way back in ancient times. Different human populations in different regions of the world developed separately, so the distribution of blood groups is uneven. In some places one group is more common, in others a different one. This doesn't affect a person's health in everyday life, but it's really important during blood transfusions or pregnancy.
The practical significance of blood type is huge. During blood transfusions you can't just mix any types - antigens from one person can trigger an immune response against another person's blood, and that's dangerous. That's why donors and recipients are matched with compatible groups. The most universal donor blood type is first Rh-negative, and the rarest is fourth Rh-negative. It's useful for everyone to know their blood type, and I personally carry a certificate with me just in case something happens.
