Why do people sleep and what happens to the body during sleep?
I recently read that during sleep the brain supposedly clears itself of toxins. Is that true or made up? And why can't you just live without sleep altogether?

You need to sleep because your body simply can't work 24/7 without a reboot. Mental and physical fatigue builds up during the day, and while you sleep your brain and body recover. It's not just rest - a lot of important processes happen during sleep. Your brain actually clears itself of accumulated metabolic waste products, including proteins that form when it works. This has been proven by science, though the process isn't completely understood yet. During deep sleep your brain is literally "flushed" with cerebrospinal fluid, which removes harmful substances. At the same time muscle tissue is being restored, proteins are being synthesized, information we received during the day is being processed, and memories are being consolidated.
If you don't sleep for a long time, serious problems start. A person becomes distracted, reacts more slowly to things, their mood gets worse, their immune system drops. After a few days without sleep hallucinations start and coordination goes. There are cases in history where people died from complete sleep deprivation, though that's rare. By 2026 scientists already understand that sleep isn't a luxury, it's a necessity, like food or water.
Personally, after 28 years of working as an electrician I know that if I sleep badly in the evening, the next day at work I make more mistakes and my hands don't listen to me as well. But when I get enough sleep normally, I even handle winter fishing easier - the nights on the ice become more alert and attentive.
I learned about this from my doctor when I was having sleep problems on the farm because of stress. Turns out, sleep isn't just rest, it's an active recovery process. The brain actually clears itself of substances that build up during the day. When we sleep, brain cells shrink a bit, and the gaps between them increase - this lets cerebrospinal fluid circulate better and flush out metabolic waste. So it's not made up, it's a real process. Plus, sleep strengthens memory, restores muscles and organs, and normalizes hormone levels.
Without sleep, your body starts malfunctioning pretty quick. If I sleep badly, the next day I already feel like a vegetable - I react slower, harder to concentrate. If a person doesn't sleep for several days straight, hallucinations start, coordination gets messed up, blood pressure can go crazy. There are rare diseases where people can't sleep at all, and it ends really badly. For me personally, I figured out that sleep isn't a luxury, it's a necessity. Especially when I'm actively working on the plot or spending the whole day hunting for mushrooms in the forest. A good eight-hour sleep - and I'm ready for a new day.
