Why do plants need light to grow?
I'm trying to grow tomatoes on my balcony in Montreal, but I'm really wondering how it works. Is it just for photosynthesis or are there other reasons? Like, can they really not develop at all without light?

Plants use light to make their own food through photosynthesis, that's the main thing, but it's not the only role. Light also controls how they structure themselves - without it, they get leggy, turn pale and weak because they're desperately searching for it. For your tomatoes in Montreal, you need at least 6-8 hours a day, ideally way more, or they won't fruit well and you'll mainly just get floppy leaves.
