Why do so many artists keep releasing surprise albums with no warning?

I've noticed that artists like SZA and others just drop entire albums out of nowhere without any hype. Is this becoming a new trend to avoid leaks, or are they just tired of the traditional rollout cycle? It's wild because you'll find out on Twitter that a whole new album exists.

It's partly leak prevention - keeping a project under wraps until it's already live cuts off the whole window where singles, tracklists, and release dates can get out early. But honestly it's more about cutting through the noise and reshaping how people listen. The traditional rollout of singles, features, interviews, and countdown hype was designed for radio and physical sales; now artists realize dropping everything at once gets people to sit with the full album on streaming instead of picking three singles and moving on. Plus there's something that just lands harder when fans wake up to a complete work rather than getting fed crumbs for months.
