Why do some classic movies age better than others?

Watching old movies at home I've noticed that the ones that age well usually focus on solid stories and characters instead of visual effects or passing fads. A film from the 50s with a strong script and genuine performances still hooks you today, but if it relied too much on technology or jokes about what was happening back then, it becomes obsolete pretty fast. It also matters a ton that the cinematography and direction are timeless, without those visual details that scream "look when this was made." At the end of the day it's simple: what works narratively still works, what was nothing but a trick of its era shows right away.
