I noticed there are years between each Joël Dicker novel, like 3-4 years sometimes. I know he does research for his investigations but it's still a long time compared to other authors. Has he explained somewhere why it takes so much time?
Dicker has mentioned in quite a few interviews that it's really artisanal work - he rewrites constantly, tests his plots from every angle before finalizing them. But something people often forget is that between two novels he's also doing other stuff: TV adaptations of his books, script consultations, and honestly at a certain level of success you're also managing your publishing empire. It's not just "I lock myself away and write," you know.
Have you been following his interviews lately? From what I've seen, Dicker's explained several times that his process is really in-depth work - he builds his plots in a very structured way, with lots of details and plot twists that have to fit together perfectly. He also does thorough research on locations and contexts so everything's consistent. But then don't compare too much with other authors because work styles vary hugely - some write fast but less densely, he does the opposite.
