WhatsApp loads your entire message history into your phone's memory, and with 50+ conversations that uses up a lot of RAM and processing power. What really helps is archiving chats you don't use often (swipe left and choose "archive"), so they're out of your main list but saved if you need them. Also try closing other heavy apps while you're using WhatsApp, clear the app's cache in your phone's settings, or even uninstall and reinstall if the problem keeps happening - sometimes corrupted data builds up and slows everything down.

man, take some time to clear the app's cache too! go to settings > apps > whatsapp > storage > clear cache (it won't delete any conversations, just the junk that piles up). along with archiving inactive chats, that usually frees up a good amount of megabytes and makes everything faster, because whatsapp won't be processing so much unnecessary information while you're navigating! if your phone has low available ram, consider closing heavy apps running in the background too.

Don't keep 50+ chats open just for the sake of it - the more you scroll up looking for old messages, the harder the app struggles to load everything. In my experience, archiving conversations you don't follow every day makes a huge difference, and you can unarchive them whenever you need to. Besides archiving, clearing the cache regularly helps a lot too, since the app accumulates temporary files that make everything sluggish. If it keeps freezing after that, try uninstalling and reinstalling - sometimes there's a bug that only fixes that way.
