Why has my left eye been twitching for a week?

I've had this twitch in my left eyelid for about 7 days now, like a small spasm that comes and goes. It doesn't hurt or anything, but it's pretty annoying, especially when I'm looking at my phone. Should I be worried or is it something normal that goes away on its own?

Eyelid spasms are usually related to stress, lack of sleep, or too much caffeine, and looking at your phone screen makes it worse because it strains your eyes more. I had one years ago that lasted almost two weeks while I was working under a lot of pressure, and it went away on its own once I slowed down; what helped me was putting my phone down a bit before bed and drinking less coffee. If it doesn't go away in a week or two, or if it comes with pain, blurred vision, or your eyelid starts drooping a little, then yeah, it's worth getting checked by an eye doctor, but in most cases it clears up just by resting more and looking at the screen less.

It's pretty common stuff and in most cases it goes away on its own in a week or two, so it's probably nothing serious. That said, have you been sleeping well, consuming a lot of caffeine, or spending a lot of screen time without taking breaks? Because stress, lack of sleep, and eye strain are the most common causes of those twitches. If it doesn't go away in a week or two, or if it starts spreading to other parts of your face, then it'd be worth seeing an ophthalmologist just to rule out something more serious, but honestly it's probably temporary.

Francisco_87 asker Well, the thing is I've been pretty stressed at work and getting little sleep, so that's probably it! Thanks a lot, I'll try to rest more and cut back on screen time.

Some people say it'll go away on its own, but a week is already quite a while, and if it gets worse or keeps going for another couple of weeks, you should get an ophthalmologist to check it out quickly to rule out anything that might need attention. In the meantime, what they mentioned about stress and screen time is true, but also pay attention to whether you're blinking less than normal when you use your phone - sometimes that makes the twitch worse because your eye dries out.
