Why have pigeons in the city become more aggressive about pecking at hands?

This year I've noticed that the pigeons in the courtyard and on the square have gotten really bold - they don't just take food from your palm, they peck your fingers hard. This never happened before. Is it because there are more of them now, or have they somehow changed?

I think it's less about the pigeons themselves and more about how we feed them. When people give them food often and in large amounts, the birds lose their caution and start acting like real beggars - they peck more aggressively because competition for food increases, and hunger doesn't scare them. Plus they quickly get used to human hands and stop seeing people as a threat, so they get bolder.
