The biggest problem is probably the logistics - the containers have to go back to the restaurants or central hubs, and that costs time and money. A lot of delivery services just haven't built up the infrastructure for it, and for restaurants it's complicated to store and clean dirty boxes. On top of that, single-use packaging is still cheaper for everyone involved, even if it doesn't make sense in the long run. 🤷
Have you ever thought about how much space reusable containers take up in a delivery van? It's actually a huge problem that often gets overlooked - when you transport containers back, you're taking up capacity that would otherwise be available for new orders. That makes the service more expensive and slower, and neither the delivery services nor the customers want that.
On top of that: for reusable systems you need standardized containers that all restaurants use - and especially smaller places often want their own special packaging because it's part of their branding. As long as that isn't solved, the system stays fragmented and unprofitable.
