What almost nobody mentions is that the Mediterranean also loses a lot of water through evaporation at these temperatures, and that concentrates the salinity more, which in turn retains more heat - it's a self-reinforcing cycle. Plus, the cold water currents that used to flow in from the Atlantic through Gibraltar have been less intense in recent years, so there's less natural "cooling" coming in.

The Mediterranean water has risen almost 2 degrees over the last two decades, and honestly I notice it every time I go for a swim in Barcelona - a few years ago you could be in the water for hours without feeling like you were burning, now at midday it's almost impossible.

What's happening is a combination of things: global warming heats up the entire atmosphere and ocean, but also the Mediterranean is a closed sea that doesn't mix well with the colder Atlantic waters, so that heat gets trapped and concentrated. On top of that we have less rainfall, rivers bringing less cold water, and all this climate change thing amplifying the effect in a smaller space - it's not just one thing, it's everything together.
