The biggest driver here is that the Mediterranean loses way more water to evaporation than it gains from rainfall and river runoff - and that imbalance has gotten worse with warming temperatures. The med is basically a bathtub where more water evaporates than drains in, so whatever salts are in there get concentrated. Climate change has intensified this by raising air temperatures, which cranks up evaporation rates. There's also the Suez Canal factor: saltier water from the Red Sea keeps flowing in through Egypt, adding to the problem. River inputs that used to help dilute the whole system have dropped (less snowmelt, dams, irrigation pulling water out before it reaches the coast).

The ecosystem impact is pretty real. Higher salinity messes with osmotic balance in fish and marine organisms - basically their bodies have to work harder to regulate internal salt levels, which costs energy they'd rather spend on growing or reproducing. Some fish species are getting squeezed out or moving deeper, while salt-tolerant species move in. Plankton communities shift too, which ripples up the food chain since fish depend on them. Seagrass beds like posidonia are stressed by the saltier conditions and warming water simultaneously.
