Battery recycling isn't just a technical problem - it's an economic one. Taking a battery apart is harder than it looks: it's got a mix of different metals, electrolyte, plastic, all crammed into a tiny format. Separating out the valuable components (manganese, zinc, nickel) costs more than the battery itself is worth. So most manufacturers and recycling companies just don't find it profitable - they lose money on every single unit.

Then there's logistics on top of it all: you need a collection network, transportation, sorting by type (alkaline, lithium, different kinds of rechargeable batteries). That's all expenses. Even where there's a law requiring them to accept batteries, they often just get stockpiled or sent to general recycling, where they don't get properly separated.

The technology exists, it's just applied selectively - mostly for industrial batteries and accumulators, where the volume makes it worthwhile. Regular batteries are small change from a production standpoint. Until there's serious pressure from regulators or consumer demand, nothing's going to budge.

Battery recycling is technically more complicated than it seems. A single battery often contains a mix of different chemical elements - zinc, manganese, lithium, cobalt - and separating them later is expensive. Equipment for sorting and processing requires massive investments, while the profit from recovered materials often falls short of the costs. So even where recycling does exist, it operates at a loss or with minimal volumes.

Plus, an enormous number of batteries are produced, and people don't dispose of them separately - they just throw them in regular trash. Without a collection system, there's nothing to recycle. Some countries have collection points, but most cities either don't have them or they're not advertised. You get a catch-22: no mass collection → no economy of scale → no incentive for companies to develop the technology.

It all comes down to economics. It's cheaper to extract new materials than to pull them out of old batteries. Until legislation forces manufacturers to pay for recycling and bans throwing batteries in the trash, nothing will change. Some places have started doing this, but it's a slow process.

On top of the technical and economic barriers people have already mentioned, I'd add one more thing - collection infrastructure. Even if a recycling plant works perfectly, you first need to actually collect the batteries, transport them there, and sort them. That's logistics, containers, people handling hazardous waste. When a battery costs next to nothing and you have to spend money to deliver and sort it - the economics just don't work out. A lot of countries solve this problem with a system of permanent collection points at stores or factories, but that requires laws and people getting into the habit.

Plus there's the variety issue. Batteries come in all different types and sizes - AA, button cells, rechargeable batteries for gadgets. Each type basically needs its own recycling process. It's simpler with phone recycling - there's decent volume, clear standards. But batteries are tiny, there are billions of them, and each one has its own chemical mix inside.

I think recycling will actually start developing when recyclers can properly extract valuable metals - lithium, cobalt, nickel. As long as demand for secondary raw materials is weak, nobody's going to invest in the equipment. It's a catch-22: no infrastructure, no profit, no investment, infrastructure doesn't develop.
