Do you think it's a good idea to use a 3D printer to make customized parts for my scale models? I've had one at home for a little while now and I'd like to know if it's really viable or if the quality just isn't there.
test first on stuff that doesn't matter before you jump into your favorite models - quality depends a ton on your resin or filament, your settings and your machine, so you really gotta dial things in. most people get good results after a few tries, it's just that the first prints are usually garbage, you gotta accept that and not get discouraged.
Don't assume it's going to work right out of the box just because you have the machine - most people struggle before they figure out the right settings for their specific equipment. Once you get it dialed in, it's honestly nice for little customized parts, but the finish quality stays pretty basic compared to traditional casting or machining.
Are you using resin or filament? Because they're really not the same ballgame when it comes to finish. With resin you'll get smoother, more precise parts, but you've gotta do serious post-processing (sanding, painting) to make it look good on a model. What people often forget is that even a solid print is gonna need finishing work or it'll have surface defects or visible support marks all over the place, and then your model just won't cut it visually.
