Brake pads worn out sooner than expected, is it normal?

Hey, I have a 2022 Peugeot 308 and after less than 40,000 km the front brake pads are already worn down quite a bit. The mechanic says it depends on my driving style in the city, but it seems odd to me. Is it normal for them to wear out so quickly or is something wrong?

Don't let yourself be talked into "it's your driving style" too easily without checking other things first - sure, hard braking in the city does wear down pads, but 40,000 km for the front ones is really short, especially on a 308 which isn't a heavy car. Getting another mechanic to check if the discs are okay, if the calipers slide smoothly, and if something isn't partially locking up the brakes is the right move; it could be a factory defect or an actual mechanical problem, not just driving habits.

You should also have the brake cylinder and calipers checked: if they stay slightly engaged, the pads wear down much faster even without you braking hard. Before blaming yourself, have a mechanic verify those components.
