Crassula ovata (jade plant) - dropping leaves, what does it mean?

I've had my jade plant at home for about a year and a half, and it was doing great until two weeks ago. Now the leaves keep dropping constantly, especially the lower ones. I've been watering it normally like always, and I keep it near an east-facing window. Could it be the temperature change with autumn?

How moist is the soil right now - have you checked it?

Leaf drop on a jade plant usually isn't the seasonal change itself, but rather what happens before and after it. In October it could be watering stress - in autumn the plant needs less water than it does in summer, and if you've been watering it "normally like always," you might be overwatering. Succulents hate waterlogged soil; the roots rot and the plant sheds leaves to dehydrate itself. Check if the soil is still moist: if it is, stop watering for a while and let it dry out completely between waterings.

East-facing exposure is good, but make sure it's not next to a heat source (radiator, air conditioning) or in a spot with cold drafts. A sudden temperature swing can stress it too. For now, move it away from the window if there's moisture or condensation, and put it somewhere more stable. Then adjust your watering: in autumn and winter, water only when the soil is completely dry, even if a week has passed. Old leaves that have already fallen won't come back, but if you cut back on overwatering, the new growth should stabilize in a few weeks.
