It really depends on where you live and how sensitive you are. In a normal city, you probably don't need one. Most people don't even notice the problem because air quality in Germany is relatively okay these days. It's different if you live next to a busy street, have allergies, or the air quality values really bother you - then such a device can actually help.

What most people don't know: an air purifier only works in the room itself, not outside. You also have to use it properly, change the filters regularly, and these devices aren't exactly cheap and consume electricity. If you're dealing with a fine dust problem, ventilating at the right time (mornings/nights when there's less traffic) often helps already. Or just get a cheap HEPA filter for your window.

My tip: first check the air quality values for your area. If they regularly exceed 50 µg/m³ and you notice it's affecting you, then an air purifier can make sense. Otherwise it's probably just a waste of money.

If you live in an area with poor air quality or have allergies, a device like that actually does help. But in most German cities, an air purifier is pretty much unnecessary - regular ventilation does the job just fine, and the pollution isn't as dramatic as it's sometimes made out to be.

Air purifiers only make sense if the particulate matter pollution in your apartment is actually measurably elevated - not just for the sake of it. For me, buying one turned out to be pointless because I ventilate regularly and don't live in an area with extreme pollution. But if you're sitting right next to a busy road, you're really sensitive to particulate matter, or you live in a region with frequent fireworks or fires, then a device like that can actually make a difference. Before that though, I'd check out the air quality data for your area - it's available online for free.
