Doomscrolling in bed before sleep keeps me awake

I know I'm supposed to put my phone away 30 minutes before bed, but every night I catch myself scrolling through my feed right in bed. Then I can't fall asleep for like two hours, even though I'm exhausted. Why is it so hard to stop, even when you know it's messing with your sleep?

Are you already lying in bed before you start scrolling, or do you pick up your phone right after you've settled down to sleep?

The thing is, the screen shines directly into your eyes, and your brain gets the signal "it's daytime now, stay awake" - melatonin production drops. Plus scrolling is this endless stream of new stuff, and every next post could be even more interesting, so your brain doesn't want to let go of the phone. It's like with chips, but for your attention.

The easiest thing is just not to take your phone to bed at all - leave it in another room or at least on the dresser. I know it sounds radical, but I tried it and fell asleep way easier. If you absolutely can't give it up, at least turn on reading mode or a yellow light filter and try not to scroll through feeds - read something calming instead, like articles or a book.

leonid.sokolov asker I grab my phone already in bed when I'm lying down. I'll try leaving it on the dresser - sounds logical, thanks.

The problem isn't just the screen light - it's also a habit that kicks in automatically. When you're already in bed and feeling tired, your brain looks for a "distraction" precisely because the transition to sleep feels scary or boring. Scrolling gives you an illusion of control and being occupied, so it's hard to stop even when you understand the harm - it's not about logic, it's about emotions and autopilot.

Try a different approach: don't bring your phone to bed at all, leave it in another room or at least far from your pillow. And most importantly - find a replacement: an audiobook, a podcast, or just lying in the dark. The first few days will feel uncomfortable, but you'll break the habit faster than you think.
