Epoxy resin flooring for the garage: how long does it last and how much does it cost?

Epoxy resin easily lasts 10-15 years if done properly and maintained decently, while the cost ranges between €30-60 per square meter for installation, depending on the area and how damaged the underlying concrete is. If your garage is small you might spend €500-800 total, but if it's large the price goes up.

My cousin had his garage done two years ago and it already had cracks after the first winter because the base wasn't prepared properly, so the cheap initial price ended up costing him a lot more later on. What they don't tell you is that how long it lasts depends way more on floor preparation than on the resin itself - if you don't really level and clean the concrete properly beforehand, it doesn't matter how much you spend, something's gonna go wrong.

On the cost side, yeah, it's around 30-60 per square meter, but you always need to add at least 15-20% on top because contractors always find surprises underneath (holes, moisture), and if the area's damp you're better off getting a separate waterproofing primer done.

I agree with what's been said about prices and durability, but I want to add something important: the quality of the resin you choose makes a huge difference! A decent epoxy costs a bit more per square meter compared to cheap brands, but it genuinely lasts twice as long. In my garage I've seen that oil stains come off super easily if you seal it properly after installation, whereas a poorly done floor gets stained permanently and becomes a nightmare to clean. If you really want to save money, at least don't compromise on the concrete prep work - that's truly the foundation of everything!

I think the others are right about the durability and prep work, but if you use your garage heavily - car, motorcycle, tools and all that - the price range they mentioned could actually be undershooting it, especially if you add sealers to protect it better from stains. Maintenance isn't complicated but it has to be regular, otherwise dirt builds up and it degrades faster.

If you see an offer that's too cheap and doesn't include these steps, run. In my case I paid around 45 euros per square meter for the whole package on about twenty square meters, but I'm in a fairly big city.

On durability, beyond the 10-15 years people mentioned before, it's worth saying that the last years of life depend a lot on how you use it. If you let acidic stuff sit on the surface (dead batteries, various liquids) you degrade it faster. In my brother-in-law's garage, who had his done even before me, he started seeing some wear after the twelfth year, but he used the garage as a workshop, so that's normal. If you keep things reasonably clean, don't worry, it'll easily make it to 15 years.
