I have a 2022 Fiat 500X and for the last few weeks I've been noticing weird noises from underneath when I go over potholes or bumps. It sounds like it's coming right from the front shocks, kind of a dull thud. Is that normal or should I take it to a mechanic? How much does it usually cost to replace them?
Don't guess and hope it fixes itself, because that dull thump over bumps is almost always the first sign that the shock absorbers are wearing out and things get worse fast! Get it to a mechanic as soon as possible because driving with worn shocks is dangerous, especially over bumps or when you brake hard. The cost varies quite a bit depending on the mechanic and the brand of parts, but generally you're looking at around 300-500 euros to replace both front ones, labor included. On a 2022 500X it should be a relatively straightforward job, so don't put it off!
Before rushing to the mechanic, try checking the bushings too (those rubber pads that hold the shock absorbers to the frame) - often it's them making that dull noise, they cost a fraction of what you'd spend replacing the whole shock absorber, and the repair is quick. If the noise is actually coming from the shock body itself though, yeah, then you need to replace it.
That kind of thud when you hit a pothole is hard to ignore, especially on a relatively new 500X. In my case I had exactly the same problem and the mechanic confirmed that the shock absorbers were already worn out after three years, even though the car didn't have that many kilometers on it. For a 500X, replacing the front pair costs you roughly between €400 and €700 depending on which part you choose (aftermarket or OEM), plus labor. But as correctly suggested above, first check the rubber mounts - those are what cause trouble and they cost about ten euros, often solving the whole problem.
