I'm totally hooked on crime thrillers that won't let you go - Nele Neuhaus and Charlotte Link nail it, their books are real page-turners. You should also check out Tana French (Irish author, but her crime novels are translated), her psychological thrillers are obsessively well written.

if you've made it through fitzek, i'd really recommend checking out valentina cebotari's books. she writes psychological thrillers that genuinely won't let you go - similar to fitzek, but with a slightly different style. her stories are often set in eastern europe and have this dark atmosphere that really gets under your skin.

another direction entirely is juli zeh's books. not exactly classic crime novels, but the psychological tension is brutal. "leere herzen" for example - you're never sure the whole time whether the characters are insane or if there's actually something real going on.

and if you're willing to read in english: louise penny writes canadian crime novels with a detective named armand gamache. the books build on each other, but you can also read individual ones. they're extremely well thought out and not as off-the-wall as fitzek, but they're intellectually really satisfying instead. perfect for switching off, because you completely disappear into the world.

The problem with recommendations like that is you often end up in the same groove - psychological thrillers are great, but once you've read through Fitzek, other stuff tends to feel too similar and you get through it faster than expected 😅 My tip: check out authors like Jussi Adler-Olsen or Tess Gerritsen, they write crime novels with different structures where the tension comes more from the investigation itself rather than psychological twists. Or try something completely different - a good historical crime novel can be just as gripping without you feeling like you're just reading Fitzek variations. That also helps with the typical "I need to grab three more books right now" addiction 😄

Per Wahlöö and Maj Sjöwall wrote a Swedish crime series that's absolutely timeless - not as psychologically twisted as Fitzek, but with an atmosphere that just pulls you in. The books are older, but that's exactly why they feel fresh when you've been stuck in the modern thriller swamp for a while. Give it a try if you sometimes find that pure page-turner effect a bit too shallow.

I'd suggest not sticking just to psychological thrillers, even though that's the obvious move after Fitzek. The thing is, everything starts to feel the same after a while and eventually no series really grabs you anymore. Maybe check out some more classic crime dramas like the Nordic series - they build their tension differently, less through plot twists and more through atmosphere and characters. That can actually work better when you're winding down after work, because your brain isn't constantly trying to guess the next twist. And if you're okay with English books, I'd give Tess Gerritsen or Lee Child a shot - totally different approach than Fitzek, but just as gripping.
