At-home fetal dopplers are pretty unreliable - they pick up all kinds of sounds (your own heartbeat, blood flow, movement) and it's really easy to misinterpret what you're hearing, which is why doctors generally don't recommend them. You can get false reassurance or unnecessary panic, so an actual ultrasound from a professional is way safer if you need to check on your baby!

The biggest issue is that untrained ears genuinely can't tell the difference between your own pulse, the baby's heartbeat, and just artifact noise, so you end up either reassuring yourself when something's actually wrong or panicking over nothing. That's why they're not recommended for home use even though people definitely buy them.
