Do you really need a doppler monitor at home?

I'm about 20 weeks along and my mum keeps pushing me to buy one of those handheld doppler things so I can hear the heartbeat whenever I want. They're not super expensive but I'm wondering if they're actually useful or just another thing to stress over. Has anyone here used one regularly and found it helpful, or did it just make you more anxious?

Dopplers aren't medically necessary at home - your midwife or OB can check the heartbeat at every appointment, which is the standard care - so honestly it comes down to whether hearing it yourself would genuinely calm you or feed anxiety. Some people find it reassuring, others become obsessive about it and stress more when they can't find the heartbeat quickly (which happens to everyone), so it really depends on your personality.
