A 2006 laptop will actually run better with something modern than with XP, even though it might sound weird! I had an old Compaq lying around and when I tried to get Windows running on it, the system was so slow it was basically unusable, plus all the security issues that come with it. What actually worked was installing a lightweight distro like Linux Mint or even something more basic like Lubuntu, which boot up fast, don't ask for updates every five minutes, and let you use the machine as a decent device for browsing or documents.
If you really need Windows for something specific, look for a cheap Windows 7 or 10 license on secondhand markets - it's easier to find than legal XP anyway, and your machine is actually built for that.
