I have a 2005 house and the electrician recommended putting in an RCD to protect us from shock. But the breaker box here is really old and tight. Can I install an RCD in there or do I need to replace the whole box?
Do you know if the breaker box has space for at least one more breaker, or is it literally packed? In most cases you can install the RCD in the same spot, it's just a matter of fitting it in alongside the other breakers - the size is pretty much the same. Now, if the box is really tight and nothing else fits, then yeah you might need to expand it or swap it for a bigger one, but that's rare. The best thing is to call an electrician to check out the situation in person, because they'll be able to see if you can do the installation there or if you need to modify the box structure.
