How do I paint small details without messing up the rest of the model?

I'm working on a 1:64 scale model car and I need to paint things like the headlights and mirrors, but with a regular brush I'm absolutely terrible at it. Every time I mess up and get paint on the body, and then I have to repaint everything. What techniques do you use for these fine details without making a mess?

Have you ever tried masking off the areas you don't want to touch? I'd say a fine brush is only half the solution - what really makes a difference is using masking tape (the kind made for models, you can find it in hobby shops) or even a liquid paint pen if the details are super tiny 😸 Applying tape around the headlights and mirrors before painting the body completely saves you from messing up, then you remove it and paint the small pieces at your leisure, maybe with a 0 brush but without stress since the edges are already protected. It also helps to keep a damp cloth within reach to clean up right away if you slip, so it doesn't dry.

For tiny details, you'll want to switch to a much thinner brush, like a 0 or 00, and most importantly use as little paint as possible each time - two light coats beat one thick one. Before you start, protect the bodywork with some masking tape or a mask made with scotch tape if you've got a steady hand. Yeah, it might seem like overkill, but it saves you from a ton of mess-ups. If you really can't manage freehand with the brush, you can try a brush with a super fine tip, dampen it slightly and just touch it right where you need it, but it's all about practice - the important thing is having a solvent within reach so you can fix mistakes right away.
