Use white vinegar or citric acid once a month - either pour it into the drum and run an empty cycle at 60°C, or put it in the detergent dispenser. For machines in areas with hard water, you can also install a water softener or add salt regularly.
Hot water does a lot of the work on its own, so if you regularly run your cycles at 60°C or higher you'll limit limescale buildup. Sure, white vinegar is effective for really deep cleaning, but honestly once every two or three months is more than enough instead of every month. The difference really shows up if you live in an area with hard water.
