How do I talk to my sister about sharing too much about my kids on social media?

My sister posts pictures of my kids on Instagram without asking me permission almost every day. At first I didn't say anything about it but now it's really getting to me. I don't want my children appearing on social media, I have my reasons, but she says she's their aunt and has the right to do it. How do I explain this to her without her getting offended?

Don't call her out publicly or send her a private message when you're upset, because that's definitely going to offend her.

The best thing is to call her or talk to her in person, and be direct but calm: explain to her that it's not about distrusting her, but that you've made a decision about your kids' privacy and you need her to respect it, no exceptions. You can tell her something like "I understand you want to share moments with them, but I need you to ask me for permission before you post any photo, even a small one" - that's easier for her to accept than a flat-out no.

If she still doesn't listen after that, then you're going to have to be firmer and explain to her that you're going to block those posts or that there will be consequences.

Your sister probably doesn't understand that this isn't about rights but about your kids' safety and privacy - there are weird people on the internet and you have the right to decide what gets shared about them. When you talk to her, focus on that instead of asking permission each time: tell her you need her to stop posting photos directly, period, no negotiation, and if she wants to share something with the family she should send it to you first so you can decide.
