My son is 5 years old and starting first grade in September. The school says it's important for him to be able to tie them on his own, but I can't get him to learn. I've tried several times but he gets frustrated and gives up. Is there a technique or trick that works better?
His frustration is totally normal, at 5 years old it's still too early for a lot of kids. Try doing it in really short sessions, like 2-3 minutes, without pressure - more like a game than a lesson. The trick that works really well is to start with the laces already tied in a basic knot and then he just practices the loop part, instead of trying to do the whole thing at once. And honestly, don't worry if he starts school in September still not able to do it - plenty of people teach this at 6 or 7 without any problem, school helps too.
