A room divider or a large plant behind your desk quickly creates a visual backdrop for video calls without needing to do any renovations. If your space is really tight, a folding table or one mounted on the wall that you can fold up after work is worth it too - saves a ton of space. Good lighting right at your desk is also important so the rest of the room in the background isn't as visible. And honestly, if you just have a neutral wall behind you instead of a chaotic living room, it looks more professional and people focus on your face anyway, not on the furniture around it.
I'd rather suggest pushing your desk against the wall and putting up a simple wall shelf or a couple of pictures behind it - looks way more professional on calls than a room divider and barely takes up any space. The thing with big plants is practical, but honestly they tend to look distracting in video calls pretty quickly, especially when light hits them 😅
Even better: get yourself a good webcam with autofocus and use the background blur function in your call apps - that way you can have your space looking as messy as you want, and the background still stays clean and unobtrusive. That really saves you from having to do any renovations and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
