How do you organize a large board game collection?

I've got about 40+ board games stacked in my closet right now and it's getting out of hand. Some are still in their original boxes but a bunch I've decanted into smaller containers to save space. What's the best way to actually organize them so I can find what I want without pulling everything out?

The real pain point is remembering what you actually own, so a simple inventory list on your phone or a spreadsheet beats any physical setup. Take a photo of each game's box/container and jot down the player count and playtime next to it - then when you're picking something to play, you can scroll through instead of opening every box. The decanting thing is smart for space, but slap a label on the front with the game name and maybe a color dot if you sort by type (strategy, party games, whatever). Doesn't need to be fancy - just beats digging through a closet.

shelving with clear labels is your best bet - i went through something similar a couple years back and ended up getting some cheap wire shelves from a hardware store, then made spine labels with game names so i could scan across like a bookshelf instead of digging. if you're mixing original boxes and decanted containers, maybe group by play time or player count on each shelf, that way when someone asks "what can we play in 20 minutes with three people" you're not hunting. for the decanted ones, grab some clear plastic bins so you can actually see what's inside without opening them - and keep a master list on your phone or a sticky note of which games are where. honestly the biggest game-changer was just not overstuffing any single space, even if it takes up more room overall.

The inventory idea is solid, but I'd flip the priority - your physical setup matters way more than you might think. If you've already got stuff decanted into smaller containers, the real bottleneck is going to be actually *seeing* what you have without digging. I'd suggest organizing by category first (worker placement, party games, heavy euros, whatever makes sense to you), then keeping them on open shelving or in clear plastic bins so you can visually scan. A photo inventory is great as a backup for remembering specific games, but when someone says "let's play something" at 8pm, you want to be able to glance at your shelf and grab it instantly - not pull up your phone and scroll through a list.
