Oh, I also just figured out all the popular board games this year because my school friends were constantly talking about them! You're right that Catan is a great game, I actually tried it recently on a trip with friends and we literally played until late into the night. From my own experience, I can also recommend Colonists and Ticket to Ride - the rules are simpler but they're super addictive, especially if you're driving somewhere and playing during rest stops. You can honestly forget about the old Monopoly, but more modern strategy games like Agricola or 7 Wonders - those are actually solid replacements, they make you think differently. I usually check BoardGameGeek, they have a ranking of the most popular games there, you can't really go wrong with it.
