"Everdell" is genuinely a good game for a group, but it really depends on what you like. If you're looking for something light and beautiful where you can kick back with a cup of tea, then yeah, go for it. It's about building your own forest, the mechanics are simple, but there's a bit of tactics in there. Just keep in mind though: if your group has people who love intense competitive games, they might find it a bit boring.
As for similar games - "Carcassonne" and "Azul" tackle a similar goal, but in different ways. "Carcassonne" is more about building a world together, there's more interaction and a little intrigue. "Azul" is something totally different - it's about mosaics, straight-up competition. It all depends on how many of you will be playing and whether you like long games or short and snappy ones.
If you're just getting into board games, "Everdell" is a decent starting point. It's beautiful, doesn't take an hour to learn the rules, and a game runs about 40 minutes.
