I got it a week ago and I still don't know if I should water it or leave it alone. I'm keeping it in the kitchen near the window, the soil looks dry but I'm not sure if that's normal. I'm afraid of rotting it like what happened with my other plants.
Aloe vera is a succulent and prefers to stay dry, so dry soil is completely normal and that's fine. A week is still too soon - wait at least 2-3 weeks before watering, and when you do, water it thoroughly but let the soil dry out completely between waterings, otherwise it'll really rot. In the kitchen by the window is fine, what matters is that it gets light and the soil drains well - if it's doing okay there, just leave it alone.
