How to know if someone is actually interested or just being nice?

Started talking to someone from my gym last month. We text pretty regularly and they seem engaged in conversations, but I can't tell if it's romantic interest or just being friendly. How do I figure this out without making it awkward?

Don't overthink the texts or read into response times too much - that'll drive you crazy.

Here's what actually works: suggest doing something together that requires them to commit time and show up in person. Not "we should hang out sometime" but something specific like "there's a kayaking spot I've been wanting to check out, want to join?" If they're interested, they'll make it happen or suggest a real alternative. If they keep dodging or going vague, you've got your answer without ever having to awkwardly ask "so like, do you like me?

The simplest move is to propose something that's clearly a date - like "want to grab dinner this Friday?" rather than vague hangouts - and pay attention to how quickly they respond and whether they actually commit or keep deflecting. If they're interested, they'll make it happen; if they're just being nice, you'll get the "oh maybe sometime" treatment and can stop wondering.
