For the past few days my cast-iron radiator's been making weird noises, like clicking sounds when it heats up. This is the first time it's happened to me and I'm wondering if it's something I should report to the building management or if it's just air in the system. The noise is starting to get on my nerves.
Clicking on cast iron is usually just air circulating in the system or the metal expanding as temperature changes - nothing serious in general. But if it's driving you crazy and it's a recent thing, you should still report it to the building management anyway, that way at least it's documented and they can take a look or bleed the radiators if needed.
Don't call a plumber just for that, yeah it's annoying but usually it's just trapped air or the cast iron expanding when it heats up and cools down. I had the exact same thing at my place - regular little clicks for a week and then it went away on its own when the system purged itself naturally. If the noise really keeps going and becomes unbearable, then yeah you can report it to the building management, but give it a couple weeks before you make it into a problem.
I had exactly the same situation at my place and it was indeed air, but the thing people often forget to mention is that if the noise persists after a few days of heating, it can also come from a thermostatic valve having little spasms 😅 Before contacting the building management, first try bleeding your radiator (the little screw on the side, you'll open it until the air escapes), that fixes the problem in 80% of cases. If the noise keeps going after that, then yeah it's worth alerting someone because it could be a pressure or circuit balancing issue.
