I want to control the temperature in my apartment through an app, but I'm not sure if it actually works with radiators. I have an old house, cast iron radiators, and regular thermostatic valves don't fit. Has anyone already tried those outlets for heaters?
With cast iron radiators a smart outlet won't help you, because it's just coolant circulating through the system and the outlet doesn't control it. but if you want to buy an electric heater (oil or convector) and plug it into a smart outlet - then yeah, that works and it's pretty convenient. just keep in mind that the radiators in your apartment are the main heat source, and peak consumption can be high, so is your electrical supply set up properly for that?
The radiator is not the case where a smart outlet would help. When I was traveling around Russia, I saw this problem with cast iron radiators in different places, people really struggle with it. But if you actually want to control the temperature in your apartment, it makes sense to get a smart outlet for a separate space heater - that will definitely work and you'll be able to manage it through an app. Or ask your management company to give you access to the corresponding valve in the basement, sometimes they're willing to do that.
