I was thinking about booking a trip with one of those agencies that organize bus tours, like the ones that leave from the station. My mother used to do them all the time in the 2000s and she enjoyed them, but now with low-cost flights and booking hotels online it seems like they're not worth it anymore. What do you think, are there still any advantages?
I had a good experience when I went to Tuscany by coach with other people, mainly because I liked not having to worry about driving after a tiring day and I could chat with others during the trip. But if you're traveling alone or as a couple, it's much better to plan your own itinerary: you spend less, you have more flexibility with timing and you're not tied to the group's schedule.
The real advantage of a coach trip is when you go with a group (friends, clubs, people you know) because it becomes a social experience, not just getting from point A to B. But if you're just looking for the cheapest option, booking accommodation and low-cost flights will definitely cost you less.
It really depends on what kind of trip you're looking for. If you want maximum comfort and don't want to worry about organizing anything - hotels, getting around, itineraries - a coach tour still makes sense, especially if you're traveling alone or with elderly people. But if you love moving at your own pace and aren't in a rush, you've got a point: these days with a budget flight for 30 euros and a decent hotel on Booking you save quite a bit and do whatever you want. The last time I tried a coach tour for a historical trip and, honestly, I liked not having to drive, but for a regular vacation I'd rather organize it myself.
