Is it worth buying a used laptop in 2026?

I'm looking for a laptop to work from home and I saw several used options on Marketplace that are way cheaper. I'm worried someone might sell me something damaged or that the battery is already worn out. Has anyone bought a used laptop and how did it go for you? What things should I check before buying?

It's worth it if you know what to check for. The most important thing is asking the seller to turn it on in front of you, verify that the keyboard and trackpad work well, check the battery (open up the computer and look at the charge cycles in settings), and test that it doesn't make any weird noises. A laptop from 3-4 years ago is still useful for working from home if the processor isn't too old, so don't just go by price - ask when it was last used and if it has any known issues.
