It depends on who you play with and how often - if you spend most of your time with friends where having fun together is what matters, not winning at all costs, then a co-op game will be way better. I've noticed myself that after work, when you're tired of competition, it's so much nicer to get through a level together with a friend than to fight for first place. Competitive games are cool if you've got a group of people who are really into that competitive vibe, but for a chill evening co-op definitely wins out.
