Is it worth taking whey protein if you don't do weightlifting?

I work at a computer all day and I'm not into the gym, but I've been seeing everyone taking whey protein over the past few years. My friend keeps insisting I should take it too to improve my energy and recovery, but I'm not sure if it makes a difference for someone who doesn't train hard. Does anyone here take it and actually see results without working out?

Whey protein is basically powdered protein, and if you're not doing heavy weight training and don't have a protein deficit in your normal diet, honestly it won't work miracles for energy or recovery. What your friend maybe didn't tell you is that protein only works well when you have a muscle stimulus (training) or when your diet is actually weak in protein - if you eat chicken, eggs, yogurt regularly, you're already covered. If your energy is low, the problem is probably sleep, desk sedentariness, or lack of balanced nutrition overall, not lack of whey; I'd spend the money elsewhere, like on a consultation with a nutritionist if you really want to optimize things.
