Laptop screen flickering since Windows update - driving me crazy

My Dell XPS 13 has been flickering ever since I did the big Windows update in September. The display keeps blinking on and off, especially when I'm at the edge of the screen. I've already tried updating my graphics card drivers, but that didn't help. Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I can fix it?

Try completely uninstalling your graphics drivers and then reinstalling them fresh - don't just update them. Sometimes the old version leaves behind junk that causes conflicts. My display also flickered weirdly after a big Windows update, and reinstalling the driver fixed it. If you've got Intel graphics (which is often the case with the XPS 13), go straight to the Intel website and download the latest version from there, not through Device Manager.

If that doesn't work, check whether Windows changed any power settings for your GPU. Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings and look at the refresh rate - sometimes Windows sets it to something weird, which causes flickering on the XPS 13. If you can, try adjusting the frequency manually, or if needed, try lowering it to 48 or 50 Hz just to test.

And if nothing works: check your BIOS settings to see if something with the integrated GPU got messed with. Some updates mess with settings there too. If you're not comfortable with that and it seems complicated, I'd just load a system restore point from before September - sometimes that's the fastest solution.

Have you tried lowering the refresh rate in the Windows display settings? Sometimes the update causes weird conflicts with the panel frequency, especially with Dell models. Try right-clicking on the desktop → Display settings → Advanced display settings → Refresh rate and drop it down one notch. If that doesn't help, the BIOS might need an update too, or you could try completely uninstalling and reinstalling your graphics driver instead of just updating it.

The XPS 13 tends to flicker when Windows messes up the GPU's power management - it's a known issue after major updates. Besides the driver update you've already done, you should check your BIOS settings to see if the Panel Self Refresh (PSR) function is enabled there. It's a feature that gets turned back on after updates on some Dell models and causes exactly this flickering, especially around the screen edges.

To get into the BIOS, restart and press F2 multiple times while booting (or Delete, depending on your model). Look for "Panel Self Refresh" or "PSR" and disable it. If you can't find anything there, try the Intel graphics settings instead - you can turn PSR off directly there too. After saving and restarting, the flickering should be gone.

If that doesn't help, your display settings themselves might be corrupted. Instead of just lowering the refresh rate, try resetting the entire display profile under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings, or even start Windows in safe mode and completely reinstall the drivers. Sometimes old driver remnants stick around after major updates and cause conflicts.

The flickering started for me too after one of those big updates, and I went in circles for a while. What the others don't mention: check your BIOS settings to see if integrated graphics is turned on - sometimes Windows activates both graphics chips after updates and they clash with each other. You could also disable the Nvidia or Intel graphics in Device Manager (whichever one you don't actually need) so only one is running. Before you mess around with that though, I'd also try rolling back the display driver instead of just updating it - on Dell XPS that sometimes helped more than getting the latest version.

Screen flickering after Windows updates is often a driver issue, but not always what you'd think. My display went haywire too, and it turned out Windows had restored an old graphics card configuration that didn't match my monitor. The driver was up to date, but the settings were messed up.

Try these things: Go into Device Manager and check your monitor - sometimes it says "Generic PnP Monitor" instead of your actual display. If so, you can download and install the driver for your Dell monitor separately from Dell's website. The XPS 13 also has this annoying habit of graphics card power-saving modes getting activated again after updates. Go into your Intel/NVIDIA graphics settings (depending on what you've got) and check if anything's set to aggressive power management - that can cause flickering too.

If none of that works, try a clean restart in Safe Mode and see if the flickering happens there too. If it doesn't, it's some software or driver that got hung up during the update. If worst comes to worst, you can use a system restore point from before September if Windows created one - it's a pain, but sometimes the fastest solution 🎯

Interestingly, the flickering started for me too after a bigger update, but only after I'd been tinkering around for several days - in the end it was actually the combination of outdated Intel graphics drivers AND Windows having lowered the refresh rate to 60Hz even though my panel can do 90Hz. I'd recommend going to the Dell support page and not just taking the Windows drivers, but specifically installing the Intel/Nvidia drivers from Dell's download center - they're often customized specifically for your model. Also check whether GPU power saving is enabled in the power plan (Settings > System > Display > Advanced display options), that can cause these kinds of issues too.
