My cookies are spreading too much while baking, how can I fix them?

LU Lucas FR 🌱 Newbie 👁 76 ⚑ Report Baking

I tried making homemade cookies this week but they come out completely flat and spread into each other on the baking sheet. I bring my butter to room temperature and I follow the recipe pretty much, but it never works. Is it a problem with the oven temperature or the dough?

That's super common and it's usually your butter that's too soft! If you leave it at room temperature, it melts halfway into the dough and that creates ultra-spread cookies. Try keeping it a bit firmer - like just soft enough that you can press it down with your finger but it doesn't stick everywhere. Another thing that helps a lot: add a bit more flour or put your dough in the fridge for 30 minutes before baking, it makes a huge difference! And honestly, also lower your oven temperature by 10-15°C, sometimes ovens run too hot and it cooks the edges before the dough has time to hold its shape.
