My dad died and left things in the treasury, how do I claim them?

We found some documents saying my dad had an account in treasury with some money saved there. But we don't really know how to access it or if we need to do some legal paperwork first. Does anyone know what steps we need to follow for this?

You'll need to start by requesting the death certificate, then contact the treasury office directly (whether municipal, regional, or state, depending on where the account is) with your father's documentation so they can tell you what papers you need for the claim, because each administration has its own procedures and deadlines. They'll most likely ask for a certificate of heirs or documentation of the will if there is one, so before doing anything talk to an accountant or lawyer who can guide you properly on this because it's not something you can sort out over the phone without legal advice.

What nobody mentions is that before you go to the treasury, it's worth checking if that account shows up in any public registry of unclaimed funds - most countries have a database where you can search by your dad's name and see if there's money there. Once you confirm it exists, yeah, you're gonna need the death certificate and probably some documents proving you're an heir (marriage certificate, your birth certificate, that kind of stuff), but starting with that registry saves you unnecessary trips to the treasury.
