The thing everyone's missing is that melatonin alone won't fix jack if your underlying problem is sleep hygiene. I spent years trying everything - from new pillows to meditation apps - before I figured out that whether it's a pill or food, if you're sleeping with your phone on and your room lit up like a highway rest stop, nothing changes. The form (natural or synthetic) is genuinely irrelevant, your body treats them identically.
But there is one practical difference that matters: foods high in melatonin (cherries, kiwis, brown rice) give you laughable amounts, so if you've actually got a serious sleep disorder, banking on those is wishful thinking. The synthetic pill doses it properly, end of story. If you're already sleeping decently and just want a gentle nudge, then yeah, a handful of cherries in the evening might do it. But 90% of real sleep problems get solved by closing the blinds, shutting off your computer two hours before bed, and stopping thrashing around in bed like it's a bathtub. Melatonin is the side dish, not the main course.
Don't trust anyone who tells you that natural melatonin (like the stuff from food) solves serious sleep problems - both forms work the same way in your body, so the difference really comes down to purity and dose consistency. Synthetic melatonin is better controlled, costs less, and actually works, while "natural" melatonin from supplements often contains the same synthetic molecules anyway. If you're not sleeping well, it's worth trying it out a bit before you decide: synthetic is the most practical starting point.
Don't go straight for synthetic thinking it's more effective just because it comes in a pill - melatonin works the same whether it comes from food or a lab, your body doesn't see a difference. I've tried both when I had weird shifts and honestly the synthetic helped me mostly because it was convenient to dose, but the real change came from getting my sleep schedule regular and staying away from screens; melatonin by itself, whether it's natural or not, won't fix things if the rest of your routine is garbage.
