Play in the steering rack - how to check it yourself?

I've got a 2022 Kia Sportage, and while driving straight I noticed the steering wheel kind of responds sluggishly to small turns. At first I thought it was play in the tie rods, but the mechanic said it's probably the rack. How can I figure out myself where the problem's coming from and what needs to be replaced?

I had a similar situation - it also seemed like the steering wheel was "wandering," but it turned out the tie rods were the culprit, not the rack itself 😅 Try this: with the car parked, grab the steering wheel at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions and rock it up and down, then ask someone to watch the front wheel - if it reacts to the rocking, then the play is in the tie rods or ball joints; if the wheel moves but the wheel stays still, then it's probably the rack.

Also at low speeds try turning the wheel smoothly side to side - if you feel a "dead zone" in the middle where the wheel turns but the car doesn't respond, that's definitely a sign of play in the rack itself 🚗

On a stationary car with the engine off, try turning the wheel - is there play or is it completely tight? The thing is, checking the tie rods and the rack are slightly different procedures.

The tie rods are checked like this: you lift the wheel, grab the rim, and shake it side to side (up and down too) - if there's a knock or play, that's where it is.

The rack itself is better checked underneath the car, looking at it directly while turning the wheel all the way - if you see the rod rattling or there's visible clearance between the rack and the mounting, that's your problem. On a parked car at rest, listen for any friction or creaking sounds when you turn the wheel left and right a few centimeters - sometimes that can actually be the rack starting to wear out.

The quickest way to tell the difference is to drive at low speed on a flat road and let go of the steering wheel for a couple of seconds 🚗 If the car immediately starts drifting sideways or weaving on its own, the problem is definitely in the rack, because play in the tie rods doesn't show up like that while driving.

At home, you can turn on the ignition (without starting the engine), grab the steering wheel, and slowly turn it from lock to lock - if you feel a dead zone at the start of the turn where the wheel spins with no response, or hear any knocks or clicks, then it's either the tie rods or the joints, not the rack itself.

Checking for play in the steering rack is different from checking the tie rods in one key way - you need to make sure the play is actually in the rack itself, not in the joints. Put the car on level ground, start the engine, and have someone slowly turn the steering wheel from lock to lock while you look underneath the car at the steering rack (where it connects to the tie rods). If you see the rack housing move clearly before the car starts responding to the turn - that's a sign of play in the rack itself. Also listen carefully during this - a rack with a gap often makes a metallic sound.

There's an even simpler method. Turn on the ignition (without starting the engine) and slowly turn the wheel in one direction, counting the rotations. Then slowly return the wheel to center. If the wheel keeps turning a few degrees past center without resistance - you've got play in the rack. Tie rods don't usually do this; they give more of a feeling of play when you're wiggling the front wheel side to side.

From my own experience, I remember a similar situation - at first I thought it was the tie rods, but it turned out the rack was so worn it needed replacing. Worth checking when the steering system was last serviced on your Sportage - usually at this age, tie rods get replaced more often than the rack, but if you've put a lot of miles on it, the rack might need attention too.
